Northbound

Greenland & Svalbard 2019–2020 34 frames Mamiya 7 · Portra 400

Six weeks aboard the research vessel Aurora B., following a marine biology team along the southeast Greenland coast and up to Svalbard. The work began as a magazine commission and grew into a book published by Hartmann in spring 2021.

I’m drawn to what an empty horizon does to people who have been at sea for a long time — the way they hold their faces still.

Quiet Cities

Helsinki · Riga · Tallinn · Bergen 2020–2021 22 frames Leica M6 · Tri-X 400

Made during the strange long pause of 2020 and the spring that followed. Four northern cities photographed at hours when nobody else was out: 4 am in Helsinki, the first snowfall in Riga, the empty arcades of Tallinn old town.

Black and white because the colour had gone out of those months anyway.

Saltwater

Lofoten · Faroe Islands · NW Scotland 2022–2023 48 frames Mixed format

A study of small fishing communities at the edge of the North Atlantic — the men and women who still work the line boats, the boats themselves, and the houses that the sea has politely allowed to remain.

Published as a long essay in Granta 162. The book is in edit.

Indoor Light

Friuli · Slovenia · Istria 2025–2026 (ongoing) 17 frames so far Pentax 67 · Portra 800

A change of register. Rooms in old houses in north-east Italy and along the Slovenian and Istrian coast — the way the afternoon falls across a worn floor, a cupboard left half-open, a curtain in a foreign light.

Quiet pictures. I’ve been making them slowly since last winter and don’t know yet when they end.

About

Halvor Sætre · b. 1986 · Sandefjord
Portrait of Halvor Sætre, photographer

I make pictures that take a long time. Mostly I’m interested in the way landscape and weather get into people.

I grew up in a small town on the Oslo fjord and trained in journalism in Stockholm before turning to photography full-time in 2014. I work mostly on long projects — usually a year or two — and the editorial commissions in between pay for the film.

I’m represented in Scandinavia by Agence Vu’ and print my own work in a small darkroom in Bergen. Books available through Hartmann Forlag.
