The coach

Mason Reyes.

I started coaching in 2013, in a shared garage gym in Berkeley, with a single barbell and four clients who'd all said variations of the same thing — that they wanted to be strong but didn't know where to start. Twelve years later, the studio's larger but the job is exactly the same.

I program every session by hand. I don't sell supplements, I don't run group classes, and I won't tell you to eat clean — I'll tell you to eat enough protein and show up. Most clients stay with me two or three years because the thing they wanted (to feel strong, to not be in pain, to lift their kid into the air without thinking about it) doesn't actually end after twelve weeks.

What changed.

"I came in thinking I wanted to 'tone up.' Eight months later I deadlift 250, my back doesn't hurt any more, and I'm carrying groceries up three flights without thinking about it. Mason just gets out of the way and lets the work happen."

"I was the runner who 'didn't lift' and was always injured. Mason built a strength block around my mileage, never told me to stop running, and a year later I'm faster and finally not breaking down every spring."

"Two PTs and a chiropractor later, lifting under Mason's programming is the only thing that's actually stuck. He's patient and obsessive about form. I trust him with my back, which is the highest compliment I can give a coach."

Common questions

Before you book.

I've never lifted. Am I a fit?
Yes — Starter Strength was built for exactly this. About a third of new clients walk in with zero barbell experience. You don't need to "get in shape first." Showing up is the prerequisite.
How does the free intro work?
Forty-five minutes in the studio. We talk about what you want, look at how you move, and put a barbell in your hands. No sales pitch. If we're a fit, we book your first month. If we're not, I'll point you toward someone who is.
What's the cancellation policy?
Month-to-month, cancel any time with two weeks' notice. No long-term contracts, no annual prepay discount, no penalty for taking a month off. I'd rather you come back when you're ready than feel locked in.
Do you offer remote programming?
Only as part of the Hybrid Athlete program. I don't take fully-remote clients otherwise — I think one-on-one in-person coaching is what I'm actually selling, and I want to do that one job well.
I'm post-surgery / pregnant / over 60. Can you work with me?
Often yes, sometimes with a doctor's clearance. Send me a note about your situation before the intro and I'll be honest about whether I'm the right fit.

Forty-five minutes,
no pitch.

Free intro session, in the studio, with a barbell in your hands. You'll know within twenty minutes whether we're a fit.
